The Psychological Impact of Workplace Injuries

Recovering from a workplace injury often involves more than physical healing.

You may be experiencing:
  • Anxiety about your health, finances, or future
  • Concerns about returning to work
  • Depression or low mood
  • Flashbacks or nightmares about an accident or incident
  • Changes in confidence or sense of identity
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Increased stress and emotional overwhelm
  • Feelings of isolation or frustration
  • Grief related to changes in your abilities, career, or daily life

While these reactions are normal and common, they can have a significant effect on your recovery if left unaddressed.

About the WSIB Mental Health Program of Care (MH-POC)

According to WSIB Ontario, the WSIB Mental Health Program of Care (MH-POC) is for people who:

  • Have a registered WSIB claim or recurrence
  • Have experienced a psychological reaction after a work-related physical injury or have experienced a significant psychological response to a workplace incident or cumulative incidents, such as traumatic mental stress, chronic mental stress, or first responder post-traumatic stress disorder.

A WSIB psychological assessment is generally the first step in accessing funded care through the MH-POC.

If you're unsure whether you qualify, our team can help answer your questions and guide you through the process.

Common Concerns We Support

WSIB
Workplace Trauma

Workplace accidents, injuries, violence, harassment, bullying, exposure to distressing events, and other difficult experiences can have lasting emotional effects. Therapy can help you process these experiences and reduce their impact on your daily life.

PTSD & First-Responder Mental Health

PTSD can result from a traumatic workplace incident or repeated exposure to trauma over time. First responders, healthcare workers, and other frontline professionals are particularly vulnerable due to the nature of their work. Evidence-based therapy can help to reduce symptoms and support recovery.

Anxiety & Depression

Many individuals experience increased worry, fear, sadness, hopelessness, or emotional exhaustion following a workplace injury. Therapy can provide practical tools and emotional support during recovery.

Chronic Pain

Chronic pain affects both physical and emotional well-being. Our therapists help clients navigate the psychological impact of persistent pain and develop strategies to improve quality of life and functioning.

Return-to-Work Challenges

Going back to work after an injury or illness is often overwhelming. We offer return-to-work counselling to help you rebuild confidence, address fears and concerns, and create a plan for a safe, sustainable return.

WSIB Assessment & Treatment Options

WSIB Psychological Assessments

A comprehensive assessment conducted by a psychologist can help clarify your diagnosis and provide a structured treatment plan. The findings are submitted to WSIB, and they’re used to authorize care through the MH-POC.

Individual Therapy

At ACTion Psychology, we offer one-on-one rehabilitation therapy tailored to your unique experiences, symptoms, and recovery goals. You can choose from in-person sessions in Toronto or virtual therapy across Ontario.

Trauma-Informed Treatment

Our therapists use trauma-informed, evidence-based approaches to help you process traumatic events, develop coping strategies, and reclaim your confidence and sense of well-being.

Our Approach

Depending on your situation, treatment may draw from:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
  • Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)
  • Mindfulness-based approaches
  • Trauma-informed care
  • Chronic pain management strategies
  • Other integrative therapeutic modalities

We focus on helping clients build resilience, reduce distress, and successfully reintegrate into work and daily life.

What to Expect

Step 1

Contact Our Team

Reach out directly or ask your physician, legal representative, employer, or WSIB case manager to refer you. We’ll schedule your appointment with a psychologist as soon as possible.

Step 2

Assessment

Our psychologist will work with you to complete standardized psychological testing and an interview to gain a deep understanding of your history, symptoms, and needs. This comprehensive assessment will give you clarity on your diagnosis (if applicable) and the next steps.

Step 3

Treatment Planning

Based on their findings, your clinician will develop a personalized, evidence-based treatment plan that aligns with your circumstances and goals. They will submit a report to WSIB to authorize further care.

Step 4

Ongoing Care

From there, we’ll provide structured therapy, progress monitoring, and, when appropriate, collaboration with your WSIB case manager.
